Breakfast cereals are a good way to start the day or to eat as a snack perhaps before bed. The range of cereals available is enormous - choose varieties that you and your family enjoy eating, but do check out the nutritional value. Choose cereals with little or no added sugar or salt. To sweeten your cereals, choose natural sweeteners such as fruit or yogurt.
A balanced breakfast
All breakfast cereals contain some fibre, but wholegrain varieties have greater amounts. A bowl of wholegrain cereal with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, plus a piece of fruit or glass of fruit juice provides a well-balanced breakfast.
Added nutrition
Many cereals are fortified with vitamins such as the important B vitamins and minerals such as iron. Some cereals are also fortified with vitamin D, which can be a useful source in the winter months when it's natural source (sunlight) is lacking. Added sugar and salt.
