We think of salad as a 'slimming' food, and most salad vegetables are very low in calories, avocado being a notable high-fat exception. The problem comes with the added dressing. Check the fat content on labels carefully and make low-fat dressings your first choice.
Recipes
Vinaigrette salad dressing
A classical vinaigrette style salad dressing is about 3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar or lemon juice. One tablespoon of any oil (olive, corn, sunflower oil) provides 11 g fat, which is 99 calories.
Yogurt dressing
Ingredients:
* 4 tbsp low-fat yogurt
* 2 tbsp lemon juice
* 1 tbsp chopped fresh herbs
* salt and pepper
Mix the yogurt, lemon juice, herbs together in a bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve immediately.
Spicy tomato
Ingredients:
* 6 tbsp tomato juke
* 2 tbsp vinegar
* 1 tbsp grated onion
* 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce salt and pepper
Mix the tomato juice and vinegar together in a bowl. Add the onion, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper to taste and mix well.
